Since ancient times, the hearth has meant home and family. A central place in people’s lives and hearts where they have gathered to share the food and warmth that would sustain them through the cold of winter. A place to share stories and remake myth and memory during the long nights. And still today our hearths are central features for friends and family, gathering for the midwinter Christmas and New Year celebrations, with present-filled stockings, candles and cards surrounding a roaring fire.
Curator&Maker has brought together 14 makers from all over the UK, listening to their stories and watching them produce their unique handmade craft. We’ve visited their studios, sheds and huts and talked to them about the inspiration they have found to reflect the essence of hearth and home.
This Christmas the collection includes reverse glass and collage images of house and home; hand-made bellows to stoke your fire and woollen blankets to strew around it; hand-sewn Christmas decorations and stockings; knitwear and children’s toys hand-made from recycled cashmere; hand-made ceramic sculptures, candleholders and tableware; hand-marbled and stitched notebooks; everlasting plants made from cut paper; hand blown glassware and embroidery kits to while away those fireside hours.
