A Tiled Tapestry

This is my fifth collection with The Shop Floor Project, and I’m still not tired of the subject—far from it! Medieval tapestries continue to feel like an endless source of inspiration.

For those who may not know, The Shop Floor Project commissioned me to design a tile collection inspired by the extraordinary Devonshire Hunting Tapestries at the V&A Museum. Created between 1430 and 1450, these four large and intricately detailed works depict scenes of hunting—boars, bears, swans, otters, deer, and falconry. Very few tapestries of this scale and craftsmanship have survived, and the dedicated gallery at the V&A is truly spectacular. I’ve found myself returning there time and time again.

For this latest collection, I expanded my research to include other early tapestries, such as those at Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, as well as the famous Unicorn Tapestries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Known collectively as The Hunt of the Unicorn, these seven remarkable works are displayed in the museum’s cloisters.
